Walking

After a few weeks of no painkillers, in the middle of the month, I tried to stand without aid. I'd called the hospital and it became apparent to me that I'd not get an appointment until mid January, I didn't want to go that long without weight bearing, my muscles were suffering the effects of no use. Gingerly I raised my hands from my crutches allowing more and more weight through my legs. It didn't hurt I could stand. A few days later I raised my bad leg and shuffled it forward, doing the same with my good leg was harder. My bad leg couldn't support my weight and move at the same time. A few baby steps were all than I managed. I was pleased. A little at a time. within a week I was walking for 10 feet or so ungainly and uncomfortable. My knee and foot hurt, feels like soft tissue pain that I have had before. Each day though it gets a little easier. I am not doing much unaided, I fear my muscles will get out of balance with compensating for the damaged ones. I prefer to walk tall with the aid of my crutches and assist the muscles by supporting some of my weight. I may be wrong, a physiotherapist will tell me how to do it properly, if I ever get to see one. It feels good though, I like walking. I like the feeling of making progress. I like the independence I have now. I can carry things, I can sit in the bath, I can stand at the basin and wash my face.

I am getting restless. I need to do something constructive, make something or fix something. I need to be able to stand back and say "I did a good job there", be proud of my efforts. I can't stop thinking about bike fettling, designing lamp brackets on paper, I want to get out into my garage and make something.

Broken Acetabulum

I should have started blogging here some time ago but I didn't. I broke my acetabulum in a crash on my bicycle, that was on October 13th, I haven't walked since. Yesterday was the first day since then that I survived without any painkillers. I didn't sleep well but that was maybe due to a stomach ache, being too hot and the strong winds outside.
